Winter in The Cariboo
Two local ski hills have everything to keep local skiers and boarders cruising groomers, roaming for fresh pow, riding the lifts and soaking up the family ski hill vibe in warm day lodges.
Both Troll Resort and Mt. Timothy Ski Area offer diverse terrain, gear rentals, hot food, cold beverages and great atmosphere. For all your lift-assisted winter stoke, check out our wicked local hills!
For those that are a little more adventurous, the backcountry opportunities offered by the Cariboo Mountains are unparalleled.
While some locations will require a sled to access, others can be reached on your own steam – whether you’re skinning or snowshoeing, fresh pow awaits! The Cariboo Ski Touring Club has all the info you need for accessing the backcountry in the Wells/Barkerville area. To get into the zones east of Williams Lake and 100 Mile, local beta is the way to go – stop by Red Shreds Bike and Board Shed and hook up with a crew heading out. The backcountry is always epic, and always amazing. It’s also serious business – avalanches are always a possibility, so keep an eye on conditions, bring your avi gear and, most importantly, know how to use it!
Classic or skate, the Cariboo has no shortage of cross-country terrain.
Local skiers are keen and organized and the x-country networks see regular grooming (mostly by volunteers – thanks guys!), organized activities for the little ones, and are all easily accessed. Trail networks in Clinton (Big Bar), 100 Mile (99 Mile), Williams Lake (Bull Mountain), Quesnel (Hallis Lake), and Wells ensure that each community has it’s own x-country experience to offer. Lit trails make for epic night missions. Dog loops keep your K9 companions happy. Warming huts keep everyone cozy and stoked! Don’t miss the Wells Gourmet Ski in mid-February: dress up, ski, and eat amazing food – what could be better! X-country skiing is an amazing way to keep fit over the winter months – hold on to your fall fitness level and hop back on your bike in the spring in top form!
